Guest Blog- Soroptimist International Convention: A New Perspective

MONTREAL CONVENTION
simwr_genera_indymetro_montreal11.jpg
SI-INDY METRO PRESIDENT GENEVA

“I have had the fortunate opportunity to attend my first SI-International conference.
Besides meeting like-minded women from all over the world, there were inspiring
speakers who gave us all the perspective that what we are doing to help women
and girls is not only the right thing to do for the betterment of society but
absolutely necessary to improve the human condition everywhere.  As one
speaker quoted Jung, “The most powerful thing in a home is the
unrealized dreams of a parent”.  Meaning all of our dreams for the
future whether we have our own children or not, drive the belief of
what is possible and the achievement of these possibilities in the people we
inspire.  I also learned of the commonality of the feminine
experience that ties women together across the world no matter their
status, culture, etc.

It was great to hear about the clubs across the world and the partnering
and projects that they’ve put in place to help African women and their villages,
sustain a food supply chain, capture and reuse rain water and to initiate water
saving processes in the textile trade.  In another seminar we learned about how
difficult it is for girls to get an education in Zimbabwe and the effect of a mere $6 can
pay for the fees for a girl to go to school for a year.  I even received a $50 Billion
dollar Zimbabwe note, that was basically made “play money” when the country chose
to use the US Dollar as it’s main currency and how many people lost their savings due
 to this changeover.

I’ve learned that there is so much still left  to do and so much more to do in the
world that we should continue making a difference in the lives of women and girls
 in every way we can.”
--President Geneva Taylor, SI-Indy Metro

8/25/11
Governor-elect Missie and I
arrived in Honolulu without any
problems. The six hour time
difference was a problem on
Tuesday night as our dinner was
not served until 7 p.m. HI time.
Aka 1 a.m. EDT.

Wednesday has found us in the
governor’s round table meeting
all day. A very productive
meeting, but none the less a long
day since we have been up since
5 a.m. Our meeting has included
discussions of how each region
differs and how we can better
utilize our resources provided by
the headquarters staff.How I wish
there was time for each governor
to visit another region’s conference!!
It is amazing how each region has
different ideas about awards and
presentations.

Our dinner this evening was fun
and full of lively discussion.
Governor-elect Missie and I sat with
three new governor-elects from Japan
and one from Canada along with
 Governor Bonnie from Eastern
Canada Region.  Each of us was to
bring a wrapped gift from our area
and then we exchanged the gift
with “stealing” involved. My poor
Japanese governor-elect, Nobuko Fujii,
probably wished she wasn’t sitting by me
….I stole her Japanese fan.  All in the
spirit of Soroptimist.!!!

Tomorrow, Missie and I will be out
on the terrace watching the sun rise
at 5:45 and then hopefully I will get
her to take our walk on the beach
before the meetings begin at 9 a.m.
again.

There will be an Aloha reception
tomorrow evening for the beginning
of the relax and pause seminar on
Friday.

Only a few more days of summer
and then the beautiful fall foliage
will arrive.

I have been reading the facebook
pages of teachers this past week
and as they say, where has the
summer gone. It seems like I
didn’t have a summer at all.
Spring conference was over and
the next thing I knew, it was time
to head to Montreal. After
Montreal, it was time to start
working on district meetings,
spring conference 2012 and get
ready to leave for Honolulu for
the Governors Round Table.

Governor –elect Missie and I
will be leaving for a whirlwind
trip to Hawaii tomorrow morning
at 7 a.m.  We arrive in Honolulu
at 2:25 p.m. and have dinner
with the governors and governor-
elects at 7 pm.  Wednesday and
Thursday we will be meeting with
them all day and part of the
evening on Wednesday.  Thursday
night we have an Aloha reception
with the attendees for the Relax
and Pause which begins on Friday
morning and ends Saturday night
at 5pm.  Our flight home leaves
at 10:45 pm Saturday night. We
arrive home Sunday night
and work starts at 7 am on
Monday.  What on earth were
we thinking when we booked
this trip!!!

Friday night is a free night and
so I think a dip in the Pacific will
be in order.  I was watching a
movie the other night and one
of the lines was: “If you want
to clear your head from stress,
head to the ocean”.  My head
needs to be cleared, so I think
I’ll ask President Sharon if we
might have our meeting on
the beach!!

There will be fun, interesting
conversations, wonderful
Mahi Mahi to eat and very
late nights.  Aloha.
-- Governor Cheryl

5/4/11
What a “Flapper to Fabulous” weekend
in Normal, Illinois. Spring Conference was
hosted by Soroptimist International of
Bloomington/Normal and what a weekend.
Violet Richardson and Dr. Suzanne Noel
even made an appearance on Friday evening
during the opening ceremonies.  What  a pair
and they gave us a history lesson to boot!!
Sally Smittle did an outstanding job preparing
the history of our region and we will see it again
at our district meetings in October.  My sincerest
thanks to her for the compilation of our clubs
histories. Flappers, gangstas, and cops adorned
the Marriott.  Bet those former Rugby players from
ISU wished they were celebrating with us!
And what a birthday cake!! Lisa Ford, did an
outstanding job on our Flapper cake.  Wish I had
another piece of the red velvet cake today.
Carene Davis-Stitt, our federation visitor, from
Soroptimist International of Eugene was outstanding.
The embracing change video was awesome as was
the membership workshop she provided for all the
members on Sunday morning.  All members left with
a happy face. It was truly a weekend of celebration
and each club in Midwestern Region should be proud
of their accomplishments as I am. Each club works very
hard to improve the lives of women and girls in their
communities and I was so impressed reading all of
the governor club award entries.  Each club in MWR
 is fabulous!!
Enjoy your summer, and stay tuned.

 Day 6
This morning we heard from
Hilary Ratcliffe and Anusha
Santhirasthipam regarding
Programme Focus 2011-2015. Immediate
Past President Margaret Lobo gave her
report as did President Hanne Jensbo and
President-Elect Alice Wells.

Several MWR members attended the SI
facebook friends lunch. It was so great to
meet women that we have been chatting with
online. Pretty cool to have a face to face
conversation. I always considered myself a
24-7 Soroptimist but some of these ladies
work more than one job, hold office in their
clubs and are doing phenomenal work on
programs in their communities. Some also add
other community work and children to the mix.
Next time I think I can’t accomplish something
I will think of my new found friends.

Two series of workshops filled the remaining
hours of the afternoon. We then had a short
visit with Director Vivian before heading back
to the hotel-yes, via the metro.

Tonight’s activities included a wonderful dinner
at the hotel followed by a walk and discovery of
a secret garden. A loud noise drew us to the window
a little while ago. We are on the 23rd floor. Fireworks!
Our bags our packed and we’re ready to go….The
convention wraps up tomorrow, however our chariot
leaves in the afternoon. Au voir Montreal!
--Governor-elect Missie

Day 5
Shortly after arriving at the
convention center we spied
PR Chair Helen engaged in
conversation with a woman from the chat line.
It was very easy to sneak up and snap. YEA!
A photo of Helen without her camera!!

Speaking of the chat line; we had the
opportunity to meet Chris Knight. She
was the initial email poster for Marion
as she travelled through Ohio. Now several
of us have found a dear friend from the Isle
of Man.  Chris was working in the Project
Sierra booth and we purchased items to
support the program and picked up current
information to share at district meetings.

Today’s themes are Women as Role Models
in Arts, Entertainment and Media; Women
as Role Models in Commerce and
Entrepreneurship; and Women as Leaders
in Health, Sciences and Sports.  International
Project Liaison Alison Sutherland presented
an update on Project Sierra. Report form SI
Europe was given by Federation President
Eliane Lagasse and Report from SI of the
Americas by Federation President Sharon
Fisher. The reports ended with a heartfelt
message and thank you from the five governors
from Japan for the support for their members.
All the reports and daily news will be posted
on the SI Convention website.

Fun today included a carriage ride tour of
Old Montreal. The horse’s name was Sparkles
and the driver was full of knowledge of the
area. The Ohio girls showed the Michigan
girls how to use the subway. Then the four
of us went to dinner and searched out the
underground shopping. We walked so
much we ended up back at the convention
center and a second trip on the train.
--Governor-elect Missie

Day 4
The country girls from Ohio learned
how  to use the subway!
What a new experience.
There is a station under our hotel and two
stops away we get off at the convention center.
We have met up with a few more members
from Midwest Region and continue making friends
from other clubs. The exchange of ideas is absolutely
fantastic.  The activities  today included two inspiring
keynote speakers this morning after President Hanne’s
opening remarks. Federation reports were given by
President Yvonne Simpson of SI South West
Pacific and President Liz Morgan-Lewis from SI
Great Britain & Ireland.  Eleven workshops were
scheduled for the afternoon. Look for MWR members
workshop experiences in an upcoming issue of the
Vision.

This evening MWR members gathered for dinner
together. It is so nice to share experiences and
laughs with our friends. It has been our experience
here that restaurants are in no hurry so we had
plenty of time to visit. During dinner it started
pouring rain, the first since we have been here.
--Governor-elect Missie

Montreal: Day 2 7/9/11
The meetings today are
at the Sheraton. We walk
the couple of blocks and
admire some of the old churches in the area.
The morning session was the last Board meeting
with President Hanna. We heard from the Program
team led by Dawn Marie Lemmonds.  Program
Voting delegates and silent observers were
randomly broken into groups to work on Goals and
objectives for 2011-15.

These were real democracy groups in action. --
So many world views and opinions working
together. It was  an opportunity to learn and
grow at the same time representing our members
in our region. After lunch, the first board
meeting for Soroptimist International 2011-2013
biennium was held.  The Programme Goals for the
quadrennium 2011-15 that we had worked on in the
morning were discussed, voted on and passed.
President Alice unveiled the President’s December
10 appeal. An amazing program that will be a
Soroptimist International project.  Project Director
Allison presented updates on Project Sierra.

A reception was held at City Hall in Old Montreal
with greetings from local government officials, tourism,
and director of the convention center. The event
was held on the stone terrace under a white canopy
surrounded by planters of bright flowers. Already in
Old Montreal we decided to have dinner.Rocky
Mountain Region Governor Jann Fitts and Gov-elect
Johnnie Jenkins, North Eastern Region Governor Sara
Nichols, and Marion and Allan Bolam from SI of
Douglas, Isle of Man, British Isles joined us.
It was a very enjoyable evening of conversation.

Our friends took taxis to their hotels and we
decided to walk.  The area was quite busy and
it was a longer walk than what we had anticipated.
The weather has been very nice with a light breeze.
It was quite a late night.

Day 3 7/10/11
Slow start to the day with nothing pressing
until the afternoon. Our first stop was a payless
shoe store. Our comfy (so we thought) footwear
is just not appropriate for all our walking. With
that task done we stopped for brunch. On the menu
everything is served with “Susie Q’s”. To me that
is a chocolate hoho type cake. Here they are very
thin curly fries. Yes, even served with breakfast.

Registration was at 2pm at the convention center.
We ran into MWR member Fran Ingram as she
volunteered at registration; Kathy Stiffel is also a
volunteer. After we registered we visited the sales
room and members lounge. With a little time to
pass we headed out for another stroll. China Town
captured our attention for a bit before returning to
the convention center.

The opening ceremony for the 19th SI Convention
was presided over by SI Past President Margaret
Lobo. The flag ceremony and welcome speeches
were inspiring. It was announced women from
60 countries were present for the opening. The
theme for this conference is “Women: Leaders in
Civil Society”. Our own Bev Bucur was the
reporter for the session.

A walk back to the hotel for a burger and we call
it an early night.
--Governor-elect Missi

07/08/11. Montreal: Day 1
Our adventure to Montreal
has begun! It is early  morning and
raining as we made our way to the
Columbus airport. We made it successfully
through security; well kind of. One of us
was selected for the “random” body screening.
Then  we await our chariot to take us to our
destination.

Three airports, and a zooming taxi ride we arrive
at the Marriott Montreal Chateau Champlain
about 8 hours later. True to Soroptimist form
we have about a half hour to clean up and
get ready to attend our  first event.  Director
Vivian and Treasurer Kathy stopped by and
welcomed us and caught us up to date on the
 happenings of the board meetings.
A social hosted by SIA President Sharon
was our first stop of the evening. No one
was a stranger and the conversations
flowed throughout the room sprinkled
with laughter and hugs. We then went
to dinner together with new friends and
old. The conversations were sprinkled
with songs led by SI President Hanne
and President-elect Alice.

We had the opportunity to sit with
several governors from Founders
region, Desert Coast and Tiawan.
South West Pacific Federation
President Yvonne and Secretary
Anne both from New Zealand
also joined us.  It was great to
share ideas and form friendships.
It is 10:30 and someone is asleep
already. :) Wonder what we will
get into tomorrow?
--Governor-Elect Missie

 06/1/11
 Bright sun-shiny skies! About time too;
not sure how much longer I could
tolerate a ‘bored’ retired husband.  He
couldn’t go outside and putter so he was
quite restless.  I offered to teach him to
knit but he just scowled at me.

Most of the region clubs do not meet in
the summer months but many use the
down time to plan the upcoming club
year.  If your club needs any assistance
please don’t hesitate to contact
appropriate region board members
or region chairs. You can find contact
rosters on the member protected pages.

Summer is also a time for community
festivals, farmers markets and other
gatherings. Don’t be afraid to proudly
wear a Soroptimist tee, ball cap,
button or whatever you may have.
Just might generate a little interest
in your club.  It is always helpful to
have a club pamphlet or two in your
purse to give away. Some festivals
donate (or greatly reduce the price)
for non profits to set up displays
about their organization.  This is an
awesome way to distribute information
about local projects, awards,
fundraisers and of course an excellent
opportunity to recruit.

Enjoy the sun! Have a safe and fun
summer.  I am cutting back on the knitting
to play in the dirt!
-Governor-Elect Missie
