The Soroptimist Canton Stark County Club has received $10,000 to date in grant funding to support their 2012 club project, “Soroptimists Stirring the Fire.” This is comprised of a $5,000 grant from the Goldsmith Foundation and a $5,000 grant from ArtsinStark, the county arts council. The project includes two art exhibitions, a documentary film screening, and educational lectures and panels between March and May of 2012. “Stirring the Fire,” from which the project takes its name, is an exhibit about empowering women around the world, by internationally acclaimed photographer Phil Borges, featuring images of women and girls who have overcome issues including access to education, financial independence, partner violence and human trafficking. Another photography exhibit entitled, “Carachina Women” by Rachel Storm, the recipient of Soroptimist scholarship in Illinois, will focus on similar issues experienced by women in Ecuador. The clube will also premier the documentary, “A Mico Loan Film” by Canton, Ohio native Rachel Cook, which talks about women’s experiences with micro loans and financial independence abroad and in the US. Educational programs led by these artists will be held with local universities and service organizations. A complete calendar of events will be posted at the Club’s website www.bestforwomencanton.org and Facebook page. An educational publication highlighting resources on these issues for local women will also be distributed in print and digital formats.
